On World Ozone Day, 16 September, we celebrate the 1987 treaty signed by nations from around the world to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals.
The ozone layer filters harmful UV radiation and protects our health and environment.
Back then, these harmful chemicals were used as refrigerants in many fridges and air conditioners. Some of these older units are still in use.
Different refrigerants are used in appliances manufactured today, but many are still potent global warming gases that can last over a decade if released into the atmosphere. Some are also flammable and must be handled safely.
By law, air conditioners, fridges and other appliances that can contain refrigerants must be safely installed, serviced and disposed of by a licensed technician.
