The guidelines relate to four Grassland Earless Dragons of Southeast Australia listed as threatened under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999:
- Tympanocryptis pinguicolla (Critically Endangered)
- Tympanocryptis lineata (Critically Endangered)
- Tympanocryptis mccartneyi (Critically Endangered)
- Tympanocryptis osbornei (Endangered)
The purpose of the guidelines is to present best-practice methods for determining occurrence of the four earless dragons to inform conservation planning and environmental assessment.

The guidelines were developed with input from:
- Commonwealth, state and territory government agencies
- scientists
- public consultation
