We use audits to identify if approval holders are complying with environmental law. Projects may be subject to independent audits or compliance audits. These audits help us ensure nature is being protected. Audits also help us improve our own processes and decision making.
Compliance plan
We adopt a risk-based approach to select projects to audit. Projects may be in priority sectors or impact certain environmental values.

Audit priorities
Audit priorities are set by the department to ensure a risk based and targeted audit program. The current audit priorities are to:
- Audit approved projects, including their offsets, that impact both critically endangered species and critically endangered Threatened Ecological Communities (TEC).
- Audit offset and land clearing related conditions for projects in the residential and commercial development, mining, and energy sectors that meet a specific risk and impact threshold.

Offsets can compensate for environmental harm caused by developments. The department is using audits to identify if offsets are being delivered.
