The Product Emissions Standards Act 2017 (the Act) protects Australia’s air quality. It uses certification and marking to ensure only compliant products are supplied. Certification confirms an engine or product meets the emissions standards before it can be imported or sold.
Marking is a physical verification on the product. It ensures importers, suppliers and consumers can identify the emissions-controlled product (ECP) as compliant. Manufacturers are responsible for marking their products appropriately. Together, these requirements give confidence that the ECPs meet Australia’s emissions standards.
Marking requirements
A physical marking (or label) on the product itself signals its compliance. While the Act uses the term marking, we often use label because it is physically affixed to the product.
Recognised foreign regulatory authorities may use different terms but these markings serve the same purpose. The label on the product must match the accompanying certification document.
All ECPs must display a label that meets strict requirements under the Product Emissions Standards Rules 2017 (the Rules).
The Rules specify that the label must:
- be durable and legible for the life of the product
- not be removeable without being destroyed or defaced
- be easily seen on the product
- be on a component that is unlikely to need replacing
- be in English.
This ensures compliant products are always easily identified.
Information included on a label
ECP labels must follow the labelling requirements from the certifying authority.
The labels should include:
- name, registered trade name or registered trademark of the manufacturer
- engine type designation or the engine family designation or description
- unique engine identification number
- identity of the foreign regulatory authority that certify the ECP
- engine production date.
