We use audits to identify if approval holders are complying with environmental law. Projects may be subject to independent audits or compliance audits. These audits help us ensure nature is being protected. Audits provide a good opportunity for approval holders to engage with us, clarify their environmental obligations when necessary and to demonstrate their efforts to mitigate risks to the environment. Audits also help us to improve our own processes and decision making.

Audit priorities
Audit priorities are set by us to ensure a risk based and targeted audit program. The current audit priorities are:
- approved projects, including their offsets, that impact both critically endangered species and critically endangered Threatened Ecological Communities (TEC)
- offset and land clearing related conditions for projects in the residential and commercial development, mining, and energy sectors that meet a specific risk and impact threshold.

Offsets can compensate for environmental harm caused by developments. We use audits to identify if offsets are being delivered.
