Disposal of bulky items from small islands into the sea

The Environment Protection (Sea Dumping) Act 1981 (the Sea Dumping Act) regulates the disposal of bulky items from small islands into the sea. If you wish to undertake these activities in Australian waters, you will require a sea dumping permit.

The assessment is specific to bulky items primarily made of:

• iron
• steel
• concrete
• other similar materials that are not harmful to the environment or human health.

The main concern considered should be the physical impact on the marine environment. Proposals will only be considered if the waste was generated at locations where there is no other practicable access to disposal options. We expect these locations will primarily be on small islands with isolated communities.
